GLORIA was flying with the HALO research aircraft during the SouthTRAC campaign in the Southern Hemisphere during September to November 2019.

The SouthTRAC campaign aimed at a better understanding of transport and chemistry in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere of the Southern Hemisphere. The campaign was carried out with the German High Altitude and Long-Range Research Aircraft HALO, based in Rio Grande, Argentina. The southern tip of South America is a hot spot for gravity waves hat are generated by the flow of the prevailing westerly winds over the Andes mountains. Gravity waves formed a focus for the science activities in the first phase of the SouthTRAC campaign in September 2021. Pollution plumes in the upper troposphere from forest fires in the Amazonian and Australia have been investigated especially during the transfer flight.
